BARC has developed and are maintaining a number of Database Systems both Spatial and non-spatial for agricultural planners, researchers, extension agents and educationists of the country. SPATIAL DATABASE SYSTEMS At national level spatial data are available at 1:250,000 scale. Datasets include administrative boundaries, land resources, climatic and hydrological resources, cropping pattern and farming systems information. Attribute datasets have also been generated and updated for all the above mentioned datasets. Overview of the Natural Resources Database
Administrative Datasets Digital maps at 1:250,000 scale of District boundary, Thana/Upazila boundary, Urban boundaries and also Roads, Rivers, Growth centres and Railways are available as ArcInfo Coverages and ArcView shape files. Soils and Land Resources Datasets Agro Ecological Zones (AEZ) inventory maps at 1:250,000 scale were published in 1988. All kinds of soil attribute in the Land Resources Inventory (LRI) includes soil texture, drainage, soil series, relief, slope, General Soil Type, pH, soil moisture, top soil erosion, effective soil depth, plough pan, consistency, nutrient status, salinity, alkalinity, calcic/acid sulphate phase, permeability, hazards frequency were incorporated. Land Type Datasets Land type map was generated based on the LRI and Digital Elevation Model (DEM) at 300 m grid (based on the soil resources database and DEM of 500 m spot elevation). An application for DEM processing and land type database creation has been developed, which can be applied for further updating of land type when better resolution DEM and 1: 50,000 scale soil polygons are available. Climatic Datasets Climatic data on rainfall, temperature (maximum and minimum), relative humidity, wind speed, sunshine/solar radiation, cloud cover and dry-wet bulb temperatures collected from BMD for 30 Climatic stations. Besides, rainfall data for 203 rainfall stations of BWDB are also available. These data are available on daily basis for a period ranging from 20 to more than 50 years. Location map of Climatic stations of BMD and rainfall stations of BWDB has also been created. Agroclimatic Resources Datasets Agroclimatic Resources for the whole of Bangladesh which includes Moisture regime (Length of pre-kharif and kharif and rabi growing periods, beginning of kharif growing period, beginning and end of humid period, pre-kharif transition period, end of kharif growing period, end of rabi growing period etc.) and Temperature regime (Frequency of days of having different level of cool temperatures T<5 ºC, T<10 ºC, T<15 º C and frequency of days having different levels of extreme summer temperature T>35 ºC, T>40 ºC, T>45 ºC). Based on these climatic data, analysis was done using APT4.0 (FAO, 1994) and surface created using ArcView Spatial Analyst. Crop Suitability Database 4Crop suitability assessment made for 48 crops using land and agroclimatic factors following an universally accepted methodology. The crop rules framed in the AEZ/GIS study was further revised and improved. There are five classes of suitability under irrigated and rainfed conditions, which are based on the relative yields of the crop. Cropping Pattern Database The BARC GIS Project generated Cropping Pattern Database for 30 AEZ and 88 sub-zones by Land type with all necessary details of cropping pattern including extent, cropping sequence, planting and harvesting dates, and water management (irrigated/rainfed). Socioeconomic Database Available data of different socioeconomic variables required for agricultural productivity assessment and production planning were collected from various sources like BBS, NARS, NMIDP, DAM, BIDS, etc. Primary data were collected for various socioeconomic variables for priority 200 upazilas of the country and included in the database. Major socioeconomic variables included in the database are: General Information - Upazila code - Upazila name - District - Number of household - Total area
Demographic Data - Population - Age distribution - Literacy
Household Types Data - Household classification based on farm size, farm household, landless and agricultural labour households - Households - Occupational distribution of households

Upazila Nirdeshika Database The Thana Nirdeshika database is a collection of local level information. Until now, out of the 460 Upazila (sub-district), the Soil Resources Development Institute has published 458 Thana Nirdeshikas (Guides). The BARC GIS Project has so far digitized and updated 458 Upazila information with maps at 1:50,000 scale. The Upazila Spatial data set is composed of seven ArcInfo coverages for each. The coverages are: Administrative Boundaries - International Boundary - District Boundary - Upazila Boundary - Union Boundary - Mouza Boundary

NON-SPATIAL DATABASE SYSTEMS
AEZ Land Resources Database
Ago-Ecological Zone (AEZ) Land Resources Database is created by computerizing landform, soil, inundation and climatic information generated by different organizations of the country. Soil, landform and inundation information was generated by Soil Resource Development Institute through reconnaissance soil survey carried out between 1963 and 1974. This database also contains climatic data on rainfall, temperature (maximum and minimum), relative humidity, wind speed, sunshine/solar radiation, cloud cover and dry-wet bulb temperatures collected from Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) for 30 Climatic stations. Besides, rainfall data for 203 rainfall stations of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) are also available. These data are available on daily basis for a period ranging from 20 to more than 50 years. Location map of Climatic stations of BMD and rainfall stations of BWDB has also been created. Further detailed may be obtained from BARC Computer Centre. Crop Suitability Database Crop Suitability database contains suitability potentials of 48 crops under rainfed and irrigated conditions. Research Management Information System (RMIS) RMIS has been developed for BARC and other NARS institute of the country. This system has Personnel, Publication, Projects, Experiment and Inventory modules. Project Implementation and Monitoring System (PIMS) PIMS has been developed to computerized the agricultural research projects conducted by different research institutes of the country. So far, this database contains following information of about 3000 : - Title of the research projects, its objectives and findings - Coordinating division - Name of the Project Investigator and Institute - Commodity and Commodity group - Program Area - Start date and End date - Budget and Expenditure Human Resource Development Database (HRD) BARC has created a a HRD database of BARC and other NARS institutes to ascertain training needs of scientists and other professionals for development of effective manpower program.
